MY BIO

Hi, I’m Sola Biu.

I enjoy helping companies propel their purpose into new frontiers of brand experience.

I’m a hybrid of a strategist and creative director with 15+ years of experience in MarComm and Design. I’m currently a VP of Global Brand Marketing at Amyris a bio-tech company with a portfolio of sustainable beauty brands. Prior to this, I was the Head of Airbnb’s Global Design Brand Marketing team, a Brand Strategy director at Robinhood, and the founder of a social justice creative coalition called Breathing Room. (Fast Company did a great job of capturing my philosophy on leadership here.)

In 2014 I established Airbnb’s Global Design Brand Marketing team with the purpose of forging the company’s identity as a design industry leader and developing an engaged creative community for the brand. Our work spanned across digital content, experiential, creative partnerships, comms, and design education initiatives. Our projects were featured in Fast Company, Refinery 29, Vogue China, It’s Nice That, Ad Week, The Washington Post, and Creative Review, etc. I also managed experiential activations and partnerships at a variety of global festivals including SXSW, London Design Festival, Mexico Design Week, and Cannes International Festival of Creativity.

I enjoy developing brand positioning for emerging and established brands and value the opportunity to create unexpected projects that integrate design, education, and advocacy. Prior to Airbnb, I worked at Facebook, The National Academy of Sciences, and Hanley Wood Magazines.

In my spare time, I advise the emerging Institute of Black Imagination founded by Dario Calmese. I’m also a member of SFMOMA’s SECA Council, a group that advises the museum on how they can elevate the work of emerging diverse artists. When I’m not connecting the dots, I’m usually traveling, making mediocre art, or watching dystopian thrillers.

 
 
 

WHAT I DO

I'm adept at creating and guiding teams to distill complex concepts into clear storytelling for different audiences through a variety of mediums (websites, films, events, social, web apps, education tools, programs, etc.) I also drive strategy and creative vision (when needed) from inception to execution. I do this in unexpected ways so audiences have an original and layered experience every time they interact with the work. My campaigns and projects drive brand awareness, engagement, conversion, talent acquisition and retention. More importantly, my work promotes authentic inclusivity, influences creative culture, and builds engaged global communities. This website showcases a small handful of my projects.
